Great cinematography through the work of directors of photography also plays a role – they craft the look and feel of the movie through camerawork, lighting, angles, and other visual elements. Special effects and editing round out the major components and allow filmmakers to bring imaginative worlds and dynamic sequences to the screen.
Of course, big budgets allow for lavish productions with state-of-the-art technology, locations, costumes, sets and more. However, lower budget films can also be masterpieces if the core elements of script, direction, acting, cinematography and editing are superb. Genre is another factor – different types of movies like action, comedy, drama, thriller appeal to various audiences. Over the decades, we’ve seen how movies reflect the times from the silents to modern blockbusters.
Movies have truly become one of the preeminent forms of art and entertainment in contemporary society. When all elements come together under a visionary director or filmmaker, you have a true cinematic masterpiece.
